We hear sounds all around us, but what is sound, and how do we hear it? Lets explore how it is captured and reproduced in our music players.
Sound is a type of energy made by vibrations. When any object vibrates, it causes movement in the air particles. These particles bump into the particles close to them, which makes them vibrate too causing them to bump into more air particles. This movement, called sound waves, keeps going until they run out of energy. If your ear is within range of the vibrations, you hear the sound. What is Sound?
As we have seen sound is caused by vibrations. but what do we do to create vibrations? Lets see what I have that can create vibrations.
The sound we hear consists of two basic elements the Pitch or Frequency, and the volume.
In music we speak of the pitch as the note on a scale. But the pitch is actually the vibrations of in the air that we hear. Lets listen to a tuning fork since it gives a single note.
Now lets use a tool called a signal generator to listen to a number of pitches from low to high.
To understand the relationship between the Notes on a piano and the Frequency have a look at this table
